University Library Federico II complex

University Library Federico II complex

The Humanities Research Library (BRAU) is part of the University of Naples Federico II and is located in the historic complex of Sant’Antoniello a Port’Alba, in Piazza Bellini, in the heart of the historic center of Naples. This university library represents an important point of reference for humanistic studies.

Founded in 2009, BRAU occupies a Neapolitan Baroque building dating back to 1564, designed by Paola Cappellani. Originally a convent, the complex has been expanded over the years, incorporating the adjacent palace of the Princes of Conca. This led to the closure of the original facade, of which traces of the main entrance remain visible. The current façade, dating back to the 18th century, and the large double staircase were built in the same period.

The interior of the library follows the Neapolitan Baroque style, particularly evident in the stucco work carried out by Arcangelo Guglielmelli in 1684 to restore the church. Among the works of art present, we highlight a marble altar with pearl inserts and several paintings, including works by Antonio Sarnelli and Ferdinando Castiglia. An important wooden statue of St. Michael the Archangel from the 18th century also decorates the interior.
