Restoration of the Church of the Holy Spirit

Restoration of the Church of the Holy Spirit

The Church of the Santo Spirito of Aversa, whose exact year of foundation is unknown, represents a significant piece of the city’s historical and religious heritage. It was originally an ancient commandery of the knights of Santo Spirito in Sassia, of Anglo-Saxon origin, and still maintains the coat of arms of the chivalric order on the pronaos.

Having become a parish seat only in 1800, the church has a rectangular shape and rises from the street via four steps, adopting a Baroque style acquired during one of its restorations. The building is located in a unique position, in dim light and wedged between profane buildings, with a bell tower that rests on the church itself, made up of two bell towers.

Work Details

Municipality of Aversa

The church was built in 1724, following the acquisition of the adjacent buildings which were incorporated into the building. As a result of the earthquake of November 1980, the Church was damaged with the collapse of the roof and left in a state of ruin for about thirty years.

The municipality of Aversa has entrusted the building to the Cimarosa Foundation and our project involves adapting the spaces to the new function: concert hall and exhibition hall equipped with hall and cloakroom.
